A National Insurance disability claim: approaching the process without assuming the outcome

Filing a disability claim is an administrative process with forms, records and sometimes a medical board. This article describes the official framework and does not promise a benefit.

The information here is general and based on National Insurance Institute publications checked on 25 August 2026. It does not determine entitlement, does not promise a benefit, and does not replace the guidance on the Institute’s website.

Different paths

“Disability claim” is an umbrella term. General disability and work injury are separate paths, with different conditions and forms. Mixing them is a common source of confusion. Before filing it is worth identifying which path is relevant — or asking for an individual review if you are unsure.

What the official information says about filing

According to the Institute’s website, a general-disability benefit claim is filed within the age range the Institute publishes, using the claim form and supporting medical records. It can be completed online, with help from a service representative on the telephone number the Institute publishes, or by sending the form and records by post, fax or the branch service box.

  • The Institute’s official claim form.
  • Up-to-date medical records about the alleged impairments.
  • A power of attorney if the person filing is not the claimant.
  • A summons to a medical board if the Institute finds that necessary.

The legacy article claimed that “correct handling will significantly increase the chance of receiving high compensation” and spoke of “the benefit you are entitled to”. Those formulations were removed. The site does not estimate chance, amount or outcome.

After filing

A refusal, a percentage determination or a fast-track path in a severe medical situation are scenarios the Institute itself publishes. Each of them requires reading the decision, not inferring from this site. An appeal or a request for a fresh review are separate processes with their own rules.

Relation to a civil path

A National Insurance process is not the same as a tort claim. Sometimes paths run in parallel, and sometimes only one of them is relevant. Do not assume that one path replaces the other.

Before filling in an Institute form

The legacy guide promised “the benefit you are entitled to”. The direction here is the opposite: first identify the official path, read the Institute’s page, and only then decide whether a conversation is needed. Do not use the office form instead of the Institute’s form, and do not attach medical records here.
